Media Center

Our Media Center theme for 2016-17 is "A book is a dream that you hold in your hand" (Neil Gaiman).

This school year is the first in which all Hopkins students have Hennepin County Library cards. We are proud to be a pilot district for ConnectEd, which enriches public school students' learning by pairing and sharing services with our public library. We will be exploring new ways to bring students and resources together. 

The media center staff support learning throughout the school, help students check out books, acquire research skills, and become skilled and ethical users of technology. Here are a few of the activities planned for the year ahead: 


  • Media Center Orientations and Book Talks for all classes
  • Grades 4, 5, and 6 kick off 2016-17 Maud Hart Lovelace
    Awards reading
  • Internet safety discussions are initiated at all grade levels
  • Grade 1 learns about books and about navigating the media center
  • Banned Books Week starts Sept. 25


  • Grades 3-6 start Typing Club keyboarding lessons
  • Grade 4 learns about genres
  • Kindergarteners will check out their first books (look for a letter home with important information)


  • Month-long celebration of reading with displays, activities, and the ever popular "Look it Up" Contest
  • Kindergarteners begin computer classes

December: All classes have pre-Winter-Break Book Talks


  • Grade 3 begins research for animal reports
  • American Library Association announces Caldecott and Newbery winners


  • Voting for Maud Hart Lovelace Awards (winning titles TBA April 24)
  • I Love to Read Week and Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss's birthday)

April:  Poetry Month


  • Lots of year-end reseach projects at various grade levels
  • All classes have end-of-year Summer Reading Book Talks

June: Watch for podcasts of school concerts and great links for summer reading
