Hopkins High School Back-to-School Information

The purpose of this communication is to describe to our scholars and families exactly what to expect for the first few weeks of school.
August 28, 2020

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year.  Although this school year looks different from any other school year, our commitment to providing high quality engaging lessons has not changed.  The purpose of this communication is to describe to our scholars and families exactly what to expect for the first few weeks of school. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to create safe and meaningful learning experiences for HHS student scholars.

Sophomore / New Scholar Orientation - Monday, August 31, 2020

  • If your scholar is a 10th grader and/or a new 11th or new 12th grader, we have an orientation planned to provide them with an introduction to the school, their advisory and the coming weeks of our school year.
    • Scholars will receive an email from their Advisory teacher by the end of the day today with a link to a Google Meet (video classroom) to connect with their advisor.  This meeting will take place at 10:55 a.m. on Monday, August 31 for sophomores and new scholars.
    • Advisory teachers will serve as the point of support to help scholars navigate both distance and hybrid learning.
  • Sophomores and new scholars will need to open their chromebooks, log into their email account, and join their Advisory Google Meet. Their advisors will provide direction for the remainder of the day.  If scholars do not know how to log into their email account, please see this video to get started.

#HopkinsStrong Start - Tuesday, September 1- Friday, September 4, 2020

  • All scholars will start in distance learning on Tuesday, Sept. 1 and continue through Friday, Sept. 4 (remember, no scholars will attend in-person school during this week of #HopkinsStrong Start). During this week, scholars will make virtual connections with their advisory teachers and peers. Additionally, they will learn how to manage online content, and watch videos orienting them to Hopkins High School and to this unique school year.
    • Scholars will receive an email from their Advisory by the end of the day today with a link to a Google Meet (video classroom) with their advisor at 10:55 a.m. on Tuesday 9/1. (New scholars will go to the same Google Meet link on Monday and Tuesday at 10:55 a.m.).
    • Advisory teachers will serve as the point of support to help scholars navigate both distance and hybrid learning.
    • #HopkinsStrong Start will run from 10:55-2:35 during the four days of Sept. 1 through Sept. 4. There will not be school on Monday, Sept. 7 because of Labor Day. When scholars’ courses start on Tuesday, Sept. 8, scholars will be in distance learning for a full day (see below, as some of their schedule is synchronous and some is asynchronous).
  • To get started, scholars should log into their Chromebooks and login to ClassLink. Scholars sign into Canvas via Classlink OR at: http://hopkinsschools.org/canvas

Second Week of School - September 8 - September 11, 2020 (and beyond)

  • After #HopkinsStrong Start, scholars will begin their course schedules with a full day of distance learning. This will last for up to 4 weeks before phasing into hybrid learning will occur. (Please see the Roadmap to Reopening for more details on our phased hybrid model).
  • Learning experiences will happen in Canvas, our new learning management system. Teachers will hold required synchronous activities each day during advisory through block 4 (see schedule below). This new schedule was created in response to feedback received by scholars, families and staff regarding structure needed for distance learning. When scholars are not in their synchronous sessions, they will complete content for their courses on Canvas: reading, writing, checking in with teachers, collaborating on projects, and more. A full 6.5-hour learning day is expected and the workload will match those expectations.
  • Access to synchronous sessions will be via Google Meet links (start with the link from your Advisor) and access to all digital course content will be in Canvas. Scholars sign into Canvas via Classlink OR at: http://hopkinsschools.org/canvas
  • This year every scholar will have an advisory, which will provide a space for scholars to have consistent support throughout the year. It is imperative that scholars attend advisory every day at 10:55 a.m.  Advisory is where scholars will connect with their Advisor, receive important HHS information and materials, as well as learn study and self-advocacy skills.  Advisory will serve as a homebase for academic support and resources during this school year.

During distance learning, Hopkins scholars are expected to:

  • Be awake and ready to learn

  • Have a study space for the day that is not their bed

  • Have a notebook and writing utensils

  • Access classes on time, expecting a LIVE session to start each class

  • Have their microphones muted and cameras on (until notified differently by their teachers) during synchronous (or LIVE) sessions.

  • Participate in 3 hours and 40 minutes of synchronous and other learning activities per block each day from 10:55 a.m. until 2:35 p.m. The synchronous activities will not run the entire 3 hours and 40 minutes which will allow lunch and digital breaks critical for success in a digital learning space.

    • Expect about 45 minutes of additional work, per day, per class.
    • Independent work can be completed at any time, and from 7:50 a.m.-10:50 a.m.  Teachers will have office hours if scholars need personalized support.

    • Scholars may choose to work from 2:40 p.m. - 11:59 p.m., however, some teachers will not be available for help, especially during the later evening hours.

Parents or other family members are welcome to come during any part of the Textbook Distribution Schedule (below) and pick up their scholar’s materials. Scholars will be participating in #HopkinsStrongStart from 10:55-2:35. It is imperative that scholars are present online during these school hours. Scholars are welcome to come in before or after their #HopkinsStrong start day (see schedule above).

Many math and science courses utilize a Chromebook stylus (special pen to write on the Chromebook). Each scholar should check with their math and science teachers to determine if one will be needed. Styluses will be available for checkout at the Textbook Distribution event.

IMPORTANT - Textbook Return
If a scholar has any textbooks to return to Hopkins High School from last year, we need those back in order to run a successful Textbook Distribution event.
