It is with sadness that I announce we are saying thank-you, good-bye, and good luck to two of our colleagues. Avril Ferguson, the friendly person at the clerk's desk in the office, is moving with her husband to Seattle. A less familiar face, but just as valuable a colleague, is Jessica Rooney, one of our special education paraprofessionals. Jessie is relocating to northern Wisconsin to work at a Y camp. These two positive, helpful, and amazing colleagues will be missed by all of us here at Gatewood.

Welcome to Sherry Weis who will be replacing Avril starting Monday, April 2nd.  Sherry is a former employee of the Hopkins School District and is currently working at Pearson Elementary in Shakopee.

MCA Preparation help will be available at Gatewood on Spring Conference days

Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) are tests which determine whether we meet federal and state legislative requirements for student performance.  MCAs also help us to know if what we are teaching is helping our students meet Minnesota Academic Standards.  We use the results of these tests to improve classroom teaching, reinforce the areas in which we are succeeding and look at improving other areas as necessary.

You can help your child prepare for these important tests by ensuring that they get a good night's sleep before the test.  Also, a nutritious breakfast is important on test days.

Another way to help your child is by practicing some of the test questions.  Stop in the lunchroom on your way to or from your conferences for helpful materials to take home, stay to ask questions or practice some of the questions here at Gatewood.

Here is a link to get more information about the MCAs and how you can help your child:

52 Reasons to Be Excited for Next Year

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We had an amazing 52 people show up for the PTO meeting on Tuesday, and we filled all the Committee spots we needed and then some! Thank you to those who filled the openings; thank you to those who are excited to volunteer for the rest of this year and next year; thank you to those who came to listen, to share, and to learn more about the PTO. We are truly excited and energized to start planning for next year and beyond!

The minutes from the PTO meeting on Tuesday, March 20th can be found here.

Is Your Child’s Teacher Great?

We know the answer is yes because all the Gatewood teachers are awesome! Let’s show them how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication. During Teacher Conferences, we will be providing a meal for the staff. We need your help in bringing food, buying gift cards to purchase the food, and set-up and clean up. To sign up, visit the Teacher Appreciation Sign-Up.

Thanks in advance for helping us show Gatewood’s teachers how much we care!

Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center – Summer Field Biology – Grades 5 - 12

Join us as we make our exciting return to the newly renovated Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center. The 33rd year of summer field biology is just around the corner, and this year’s theme is “Caught in the Web of MN’s Spiders”. We’ll learn about the 450+ species of Araneae (spiders) spinning webs in MN.  Species identification, spider venom and web creation will also be on our agenda as we work to understand these often feared, but amazing creatures.  This is a technology free program.  We value this opportunity to unplug as we connect with each other and nature. July 10, and July 16 – 20.  $539

Kindergarten Summer School Program

Students entering Kindergarten this fall can take part in a 12 day summer program called Ready-Set-Kindergarten.  This class will be held at Alice Smith Elementary, Monday – Friday, June 18 – July 3rd – 8:30 – 12:00.  Applications can be found in the school office.  On May 1, a lottery will occur, and 50 students will be selected from the applications submitted.  Only full completed applications will be entered into the lottery.  Those selected will receive a letter with more information in mid-May.
