February 1st is World Hijab Day and this is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about why women wear a hijab and why it is important to some Muslim women. In a very few countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan women are oppressed and have no choice—they are required to wear one. To us who are free, this is completely against everything  we believe to be fair and equitable. In many countries Muslim women choose not to wear a hijab. Some countries, both in Europe and Muslim majority countries, laws have been passed  banning some or all types of hijab in public or in certain types of locales. Muslim women feel pressure to wear and to not wear a hijab.  No one should ever feel forced to wear a hijab.

World Hijab Day is a time to help make a hijab feel less “foreign” or different and help non Muslims be sensitive to the stigma that many Muslim women face when wearing it such as stares and negative comments.

There are many forms of hijab and there are many reasons why women actually choose to wear one. Women who choose to wear it often view it as a form of empowerment. These women feel that people aren't judging them by their looks, but rather paying attention to their words and character.

At Gatewood, we will honor and recognize World Hijab Day on Friday, January 31st. We will share information and work to increase  our knowledge and understanding. Thank you for your support and for helping your children talk about this at home.
