Our Community

gatewood students

This pre-kindergarten through grade 6 school serves approximately 530 students from a rich tapestry of racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. Our students enjoy the large playground and athletic fields. In the winter, our students can skate and slide during recess. Built in 1969, the building was remodeled in 1993, 1996 and again in 2010.

Gatewood has a reputation for excellence, equity, and professionalism. Our Gatewood community wants students to succeed academically, be kept safe, be lifelong learners, and flourish in an abundance of acceptance and love. Building a sense of community means that all adults accept responsibility for the education of all children. Students learn from the beginning that they are responsible for their choices regarding schoolwork and behavior.

Children will thrive when they are acknowledged for who they are and their accomplishments. Positive relationships with adults and peers are key elements in a successful education, and a very important component at Gatewood School.

Learning and sharing at Gatewood does not stop at the end of the school day. Gatewood is the nexus for a wide range of activities. Families gather together for Family Fun Nights, Imagination Fair, grade-level band and orchestra concerts, play/musical productions, and other occasions where families can enjoy their children at special programs. Our school and athletic fields are used for many park and recreational programs all year long.

Gatewood is also a strong advocate of Environmental Education and has contracted a school naturalist to work with individual classes each season of the year. In addition, the school has a magnificent schoolyard nature area.
