Enroll in Kindergarten
Everyone belongs in Hopkins. You belong in Hopkins!
Hopkins Public Schools serves the community by welcoming all learners, honoring culture, and inspiring remarkable growth and achievement. Our district is a special place and unique in many ways. We are academically focused, but also human-focused.
There is no typical Hopkins student, and we value that diversity. We are a blend of faiths, cultures, and backgrounds, forming a district of individuals with rich stories.
We are excited to welcome you and your Kindergartner to our school district!
Apply for Kindergarten!
To apply for Kindergarten, please follow the instructions in the steps below. If you have already found your school and completed an Early Childhood Screening, you can proceed to the Step 3: Enrollment Information and Online Form dropdown menu.
- Step 1: Find Your School
- Step 2: Schedule Your Child's Early Childhood Screening Before Starting Kindergarten
- Step 3: Enrollment Information and Online Registration Form
Step 1: Find Your School
Find Your School
To start, determine what K-12 school your scholar will attend by clicking on our School Finder tool. (Note: this will open in a new tab)
Once you enter the site, add your home address into the search bar to identify your schools of attendance. If you do not have an address or want to explore all schools you may click the "Find on Map" button to go directly to the map.
- If your address does not connect to a school in the School Finder, please proceed to the Open Enrollment drop-down on the Enrollment page once you are ready to enroll.
- If you want to enroll your kindergartner in a different school than designated:
- First, complete your Online Registration using your home school on the Enrollment page once you're ready to enroll.
- Then, complete the in-district transfer forms in the In-District Transfer drop-down.
Step 2: Schedule Your Child's Early Childhood Screening Before Starting Kindergarten
Early childhood screenings are a quick and simple check of how your child is growing and developing. Screenings are strongly recommended between the ages of three and four and are required before starting kindergarten. Early screenings are beneficial because if there are any areas of concern, early identification will allow time for your family to access services prior to entering kindergarten.
Appointments are available throughout the school year, September through May. Please be aware that appointment times fill very quickly. You can expect to find appointment times 4 to 6 weeks (or more) from today. Schedule now to reserve your space.
Please note: for the 2020-21 school year, we are scheduling Virtual Screening appointments.
Screenings are structured to include fun activities that will assess multiple areas of your child’s health and development, including:
- Vision, hearing, and physical growth
- Health and immunization history
- Social and emotional development
- Fine and gross motor ability
- Cognitive development
- Speech, language, and articulation
Early childhood screening supports your child’s readiness for kindergarten and promotes positive developmental outcomes. This screening may also lead to referrals for early learning opportunities. Early childhood screening is not a kindergarten entrance test. For more information, view the Minnesota Statute on developmental screenings.

Applications will be reviewed by the Hopkins District Administrative Services Department and building principals. Among their considerations are current class sizes at the requested school, sibling preference, and availability of services.
Applications for the 2021-22 school year are available for submission at this time.
The deadline for the initial placement process is January 15, 2021. If there are more applicants than there are spaces available, a lottery will be held.
