Special Meeting of the School Board

The special meeting of the Board of Education of Independent School District 270 was conducted in-person and streamed virtually, on Wednesday, October 08, 2025. The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m.
School Board members present: Chair Shannon Andreson, Treasurer Rachel Hartland, Director Brooke Roper, Vice Chair Jason Ross, Clerk Kaj Thompson, and Director Jen Westmoreland. Director Zhiming Zhao joined the meeting virtually.
School Board members absent: None.
Student Board reps present: None.
Staff members present: Superintendent Rhoda Mhiripiri-Reed.
Staff members absent: None.
Approval of Agenda
Westmoreland moved; Roper seconded; to approve the agenda as presented. Carried.
Consent Calendar
Westmoreland moved; Hartland seconded; to approve the Consent Calendar as presented: A) Inclement Weather E-Learning Plan; B) 2027 Student Trip to France; C) Approval of Election Judges. Carried.
Resolution Appointing Election Judges
Westmoreland moved; Ross seconded; that the Board approves the following resolution:
It is hereby resolved by the School Board of Independent School District 270, State of Minnesota, as follows:
1. The individuals specified in EXHIBIT A attached hereto, each of whom is qualified to serve as an election judge, are hereby appointed as judges of election for the School District’s general election on November 4, 2025, to act as such at the combined polling places listed on said exhibit.
2. The election judges shall act as clerks of election, count the ballots cast, and submit the results to the School Board for canvass in the manner provided for other school district elections.
3. The School District Clerk and the Clerk’s designee are hereby authorized to appoint additional elections judges, as needed, to fill vacancies that may occur on or before election day.
Those voting in favor thereof: Anderson, Hartland, Roper, Ross, Thompson, Westmoreland, and Zhao. Carried.
Resolution Supporting Workforce Housing Expansion
Hartland moved; Westmoreland seconded; that the Board approves the following resolution:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Hopkins School Board affirms its support for policies, partnerships, and initiatives that expand affordable workforce housing within the district’s boundaries; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the School Board will collaborate with local municipalities, Hennepin County, community organizations, and housing partners to advocate for and promote the development of housing options that enable staff and families to thrive in our community; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the School Board commits to continued advocacy for housing solutions that advance educational equity, strengthen family stability, and ensure that all Hopkins schools remain strong, inclusive, and rooted in the communities they serve.
Those voting in favor thereof: Anderson, Hartland, Roper, Ross, Thompson, Westmoreland, and Zhao. Carried.
