Regular Meeting of the School Board

May 19, 2026

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Independent School District 270 was conducted in-person and streamed virtually, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The meeting was called to order at 7:25 p.m. 

School Board members present: Chair Shannon Andreson, Treasurer Rachel Hartland, Director Johanna Hyman, Vice Chair Brooke Roper, Director Kaj Thompson, Clerk Sara Wilhelm Garbers, and Director Zhiming Zhao.

School Board members absent: None.

Student Board reps present: Eloise Bullen (11), Sufyan Osman (10), and Adina Togal (9).

Staff members present: Superintendent Rhoda Mhiripiri-Reed. 

Staff members absent: None.

Open Agenda — Public Comments

Community members Danika L, Alex L, Wisdom M, and Nana C addressed the Board regarding items that were not on the agenda. Community members Raechel B and Nana C left voicemails addressing items that were not on the agenda.

Reports

Student Board Representatives: Bullen, Osman, and Togal updated the Board on recent events at Hopkins High School. 

Superintendent: Mhiripiri-Reed spoke about events and highlights from the past few weeks with a staff spotlight on the Business & Grants Development Officer, Laura Hetzel with an update of grant information.

Approval of Agenda 

Hartland moved; Roper seconded. Motion: to approve the agenda as presented. All voted aye. Carried.

Consent Calendar 

Hartland moved; Roper seconded. Motion to approve the Consent Calendar as presented: A) Approval of Minutes — Regular Meeting Conducted on May 05, 2026; B) Human Resources — Personnel Updates; C) Policies in Second Read; D) 2027-28 Calendar - Second Read; E) Transportation Contract - Final; F) Ubah Property Agreement; G) HHS Dome Construction Contract. All voted aye. Carried. 

Treasurer’s Report 

Hartland moved; Roper seconded. Motion to approve financial disbursements in the amount of $2,827,058.13 for the period of April 01, 2026 through April 15, 2026. All voted aye. Carried. 

Easement Agreement

Wilhelm Garbers moved; Roper seconded Motion to approve the Easement modification to Katherine Curren Elementary building. All voted aye. Carried.

2027-28 District 287 LTFM Resolution

Hartland moved; Roper seconded. Motion to waive the reading of the resolution. All voted aye. Carried.

Hartland moved; Roper seconded, that the Board approves the following:

 Resolution approving Intermediate School District No. 287’s Long-Term Facility Maintenance program budget and authorizing the inclusion of a proportionate share of those projects in the District’s application for Long-Term Facility maintenance revenue.

FY27 Preliminary Budget Update

Roper moved; Hartland seconded. Motion to approve the FY27 Preliminary Budget. All voted aye. Carried.

Vice Chair Roper and Assistant Superintendent Lightfoot provided background on the presented policies. 

Wilhelm Garbers moved; Roper seconded. Motion that the Board approves the above policies in First Read; further, the Board directs the Administration to prepare the policies (with suggested revisions) for approval in Second Reading at the next meeting. All voted aye. Carried.

Board members reported on recent educational activities/events in which they have participated.
