Chris Tangert named MNSHAPE’s Paul Schmidt Award recipient

Gatewood Elementary’s Chris Tangert was recently named the Minnesota Society of Health and Physical Educators’ (MNSHAPE) Paul Schmidt Award winner. The award recognizes outstanding service and contributions in health, physical education, recreation, or dance.

The Paul Schmidt Award is given to individuals who demonstrate excellence in areas such as professional preparation, service within their school and community, contributions to MNSHAPE or Minnesota Developmental Adapted Physical Education (MN DAPE), creativity in curriculum development, and related professional activities, including securing grants, scholarships, or other honors.

Tangert stood out to the selection committee because of his extensive qualifications and dedication to his profession. He holds a master’s degree in applied kinesiology from the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis. He is a visionary leader behind the annual overnight trip to Eagle Bluff Environmental Center, where he actively engages and leads students in outdoor educational experiences. At Gatewood, Tangert launched a unique Unified PE class that brings together students with disabilities and their peers not living with disabilities, creating an inclusive and enriching environment for all participants.

Tangert’s contributions extend beyond the classroom. He leads a cross-country skiing experience at a local golf course each year and organizes an annual bike rodeo that promotes bike safety and skills while bringing the community together. He is known for supporting his school community in creative ways. He sold t-shirts to raise $12,000 to support kitchen staff and before- and after-school child care workers.

Liz Parr-Smestad, a member of MNSHAPE Board of Directors, said the goal with awards like the Paul Schmidt Award is to celebrate exemplary educators throughout Minnesota and share their stories.

“Chris Tangert embodies the spirit of this award, making him a deserving recipient who has made a significant impact on his school and community through his service, creativity, and leadership,” she said.

Tangert will be honored at the MNSHAPE State Conference at Lakeville South High School on Nov. 4 in front of family, friends, and colleagues.
