Congratulations to our Minnesota State High School League Class 4A champions! Both of them!
The Hopkins Royals Girls Basketball team finished their undefeated season with a state title, outperforming the Stillwater Ponies in a 74-45 victory at Williams Arena on Saturday, March 16th. Maya Nnaji led the Royals in scoring with 18 points, while Paige Bueckers pitched in an impressive all-around state line of 13 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and five steals. This was their first state title since 2015 and the 7th state title of Coach Brian Cosgriff's career.
The very next weekend, the Hopkins Boys Royals took their own state title when they defeated the Lakeville North Panthers 55-40 in a hard-fought defensive battle at Target Center. After the Panthers took an early lead in the second half, the Royals answered with a 14-0 run and never looked back. Kerwin Walton led the scoring for the Royals with 17 points, while Dane Zimmer grabbed a whopping 21 rebounds. This is the tenth state title for the team!
If twin State Championships weren't enough, Paige Bueckers and Zeke Nnaji were named the 2019 Star Tribune Metro Players of the Year! It was truly a tremendous year for Royals Basketball and we couldn't be more proud of these student athletes!
