Hopkins SMARTS Express and Ready, Set, Kindergarten students cooled down in an unconventional way this week: Drenched by a fire hydrant.
With a little help from the Hopkins Fire Department, students at Alice Smith Elementary got a hands-on lesson in fire safety and capped it off with splashing through the hydrant. Firefighters discussed summer safety, taught kids how to stay cool outdoors, and what to do if they find fireworks on the ground.
Firefighters also demonstrated how their gear works and conducted tours of a fire truck. One student even helped open the hydrant – which meant plenty of time for playing in the water.
