A favorite Friday night activity each fall is the service night at Meadowbrook Elementary. Together, staff, students, families, and community members packed over a ton of product for PRISM, and hundreds of other items for local organizations.

Meadowbrook Elementary has a long history of giving to those in need. And a staple tradition each fall is the school-wide service night. On Nov. 17, students, staff, families, and community members filled the gymnasium to prepare items to donate to local organizations.

“It was a wonderful night,” said Meadowbrook Principal Greta Evans-Becker. “Many parents said that it is their favorite event of the year.”

Throughout the evening, students at various stations wrote letters to members of civic leadership, sorted and packed toiletries, tied blankets, and put together kits for those experiencing homelessness. Money was also collected during the event, which will be sent to those in need in Puerto Rico. Students also sold signs that said, “All Are Welcome Here.”

“It is a feel good event,” Evans-Becker said. “By the time families leave everyone has done several good things for others, and that is tons of fun.”

Event totals:

  • 1498 pounds of diapers, baby wipes, toilet paper and detergent were donated to PRISM which included:
      • 205 bags with four rolls of toilet paper
      • 384 bags of diapers
      • more than 12 cases of diaper wipes
      • 275 bags with detergent for 9 loads
  • 20 snuffle mats for dogs
  • 283 kitty ping-pong balls
  • 400 books donated
  • 319 pounds of textiles collected
  • 180 baby blankets
  • 737 kids' pack weekend meal kits
  • Letters written to civic leaders
