The young men and women featured in this series define excellence in citizenship, scholarship, and leadership. Jessica Melnik was an obvious choice for the first installment.
As a junior at Hopkins High School, Jessica has achieved more than some do in a lifetime. She started Girls United MN in seventh-grade, a nonprofit that serves to inspire and empower young women. Girls United MN serves as a forum for the girls to talk about gender, self-esteem, and body image. They also conduct STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities and invite female professionals to speak about their jobs and the workforce climate.
Jessica's dedicated and selfless work ethic has not only become a model for her peers, but also the next generation of leaders who will carry on her legacy after she graduates.
