Community Education Timeline: Your child's year before kindergarten
If your child will be 5 years old by September 1, 2016, you will want to take the following steps to prepare for kindergarten.
1. Schedule screening
This is a simple check of how your child is growing and developing. Minnesota state law requires that your child complete screening before entering kindergarten. You will want to schedule this appointment promptly, as appointments are limited, fill up quickly and end in May. Questions? Call 952-988-5017.
2. Update your child's immunization
You will be required to show proof of these immunizations prior to your child's first day of kindergarten.
3. Find your school
What school will your child attend? Find out with this simple search.
4. Fill out a district census form
You can request a form from the Hopkins Public School District Census office at 952.988.4115. Registering with census assures that you will receive information about the kindergarten registration process.
5. Attend information meetings
Kindergarten Parent Information Meetings: Each elementary school will conduct a parent-only information session on your kindergarten options.
Xing Xing Academy Parent Information Meetings and Immersion Fairs: Attend these meetings information about our Chinese immersion kindergarten program.
Getting Ready for Kindergarten Information Meeting: Find out ways to support your child's entry into kindergarten. Bring your questions for a district principal and kindergarten teacher.
Kindergarten Roundup: You and your child are encouraged to attend this special event. No matter what your kindergarten choice, you will receive important information and your child will have an opportunity to meet the teachers and see their classroom.
Early Entrance Meeting: Your child must be 5 years of age on September 1 to be admitted to kindergarten. There are occasional exceptions to this rule for a child whose birthday falls between September 2 and October 31. If you feel your child is kindergarten ready and want to consider early school entry, attend this session to find out more about the process.
6. Register your child for kindergarten
Hopkins Public Schools offers your family a variety of kindergarten options. Each option has a different application deadline. In-District transfers and Open Enrollment from another school district are two additional options your family may wish to consider.
