AI Literacy

In Hopkins Public Schools, we take a human-centered approach to using Artificial Intelligence (AI); it helps us personalize learning, promote equity, and prepare students for the future.

Our “why” behind using and teaching Artificial Intelligence (AI) is clear: leverage AI to enhance engagement, address disparities, and build critical skills for success in a global society. Guided by Vision 2031 and the Hopkins Learning Framework, we ensure every student has access to high-quality, adaptive learning experiences. We are committed to student safety, staff efficiency for well-being, and making ethical decisions regarding AI use.

Hopkins Public Schools provides guidance to inform classroom practices in a safe and ethical manner; this guidance is flexible, supportive, and reviewed annually to ensure relevance and consistency in our rapidly evolving technological landscape.

AI Guidance in Hopkins Classrooms

How Hopkins is talking with students about the responsible and ethical use of AI to support learning.

Hopkins is committed to helping students use AI responsibly and effectively. To support this goal, we have introduced an AI Traffic Light Protocol. This tool provides a clear, consistent framework that guides students on when AI may be used to enhance learning, when it should serve as a collaborative partner, and when it should be avoided. This approach promotes academic integrity while empowering students to think critically, remain the authors of their work, and use AI as a tool that supports, but does not replace, the learning process.

Students are also reminded that they always need to cite their AI use, including what tool they used and how they used it. We emphasize to students that they are the final author of their work, and that they are responsible for the final product, including any errors or bias in AI-generated content.
