XinXing Academy, Hopkins Public Schools' Chinese immersion program, opened at Eisenhower Elementary School in 2007. XinXing means New Star in Mandarin Chinese. Our Chinese immersion program attracts students from around the Hopkins School District, as well as from other school districts in the Twin Cities through open enrollment.
XinXing Academy is part of Eisenhower Elementary, and we are one school community with two high-quality educational programs. At the elementary level, each grade has two Chinese immersion classrooms. XinXing Academy continues in seventh-grade at West Junior High with XinXing @ West. In the 2017-18 school year, Chinese immersion will become part of the high school curriculum, and students will take advanced coursework in Chinese at the college level.
XinXing offers two sections of full-day kindergarten each year. We believe that having full-day kindergarten provides students with sufficient contact with the language to form the necessary base for success in first-grade and beyond.
XinXing classrooms have been designated Confucius Classrooms by the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota. Because of this designation, XinXing has received grants to support Chinese cultural experiences such as Chinese music, dance, art, and Gong Fu. Teacher training and materials have also been provided by the Confucius Institute to support Chinese language learning. A sister school connection between XinXing and Capital Normal University Primary School in Beijing, China, is also being supported through the Confucius Institute affiliation.
Partnership in China
XinXing Academy and XinXing @ West have formed strong partnerships with schools in Shanghai and Beijing, which create a robust learning environment in classrooms both here in Hopkins and in China.
XinXing Academy at Eisenhower Elementary School has a sister-school partnership with Capital Normal University Primary School in Beijing. Supported through our affiliation with the Confucius Institute, the partnership brings authentic Chinese culture into the classroom through shared learning experiences with students half a world away.
XinXing @ West deepened its roots in Chinese education through a sister-school partnership with Cosco Experimental School in 2014. Located in the bustling city of Shanghai, the Cosco Experimental School is in the Putuo School District and serves over 91,000 students. This partnership has provided the opportunity for XinXing students to travel to Shanghai when they are in eighth-grade. The voluntary trip abroad includes classroom and home visits, tours of Shanghai, and cultural experiences that challenge their Chinese language competency. In 2017, six fourth-grade students also traveled with the group.
Recently, the XinXing program finalized a partnership with the Wuning Primary School, adding to the opportunities available to our immersion students in the future.
