Question

Why is Hopkins starting the 2009-10 school year before Labor Day?

Answer

State law authorizes school districts with renovation, maintenance, and infrastructure improvement projects in their buildings totalling more than $400,000 to have some flexibility in establishing their school calendars. We are working on major maintenance projects at many of our buildings such as stonework tuck-pointing and restoration, heating and ventilation improvement, roof repairs, etc. We have about $6 million worth of maintenance projects planned for the summer of 2010. Starting the school year on August 31 will allow our students and families to have the customary two-week winter break (December 21-January 1), a one-week spring break (March 29-April 2), and the last day of school on June 4.
