Screening ProgramsScreening Programs

One of the functions of the school health program is to promote students’ health through early identification and detection of any problems that may cause disability or interfere with learning.

These screenings are completed as a whole group or individually by referral.  Please refer to your school’s calendar for dates and times of these programs.

Screening Programs

  • Hearing and vision screening for 1st, 3rd, 5th and 8th grade students
  • Color vision deficiency screening for 1st grade boys
  • Blood pressure screening may be on conducted 4th grade students
  • Scoliosis screening may be conducted on 5th and 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys. More information about scoliosis screening is linked below.

If a student fails on the first screening, they will be re-screened by the Licensed School Nurse. If a student fails the second time, a referral notice will be sent to the parent, encouraging a physician’s visit.

Scoliosis Screening

According to available information, two to five children in every one hundred may develop scoliosis.  Some will require treatment.  If this condition is detected early, and it is appropriately treated, progressive spine deformity can be prevented.

The procedure for screening is a simple 30-second test in which the screener (the Licensed School Nurse) looks at the child’s bare back in a standing, forward, bending position.  The screening will take place in the Nurse’s Office to ensure privacy.  They may wear an open-back swimming suit or a bra.  If your child has a suspected curvature, you will be notified and asked to take your child to your family physician for further evaluation.
