Question
Is the high school going to change from the block system of classes to conventional shorter classes?
Answer
At this time, there is no specific decision to change the high school schedule. However, the Hopkins School Board has directed the administration to conduct a secondary program review. The purpose of this study will be to proactively review the junior and senior high school program requirements and master schedule, keeping in mind the desire to provide optimal student learning and achievement within the resources available to the school district. The study will take place over the next 14 months and once it is completed, recommendations will be presented to the superintendent and school board in about October 2010. If any changes are recommended based on this study, the district would prepare students, staff, and families for implementation during
the 2011-12 school year.
As part of this study, the district's administration will be conducting surveys and focus groups with parents and community members. These will likely occur within the next few months. Further information will be forthcoming about these once the study begins.
A group working on this study is scheduled to begin meeting this week (week of Aug. 31). As the study progresses, we will be updating the school board and community regularly through a variety of communications such as website, focus groups, board updates, articles, etc.
