SHIP Funds Provide Support for Healthy Hopkins Schools
Hopkins is a recipient of the Statewide Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) grant. This grant, funded through the Minnesota Department of Health, is assiting Hopkins School District in developing and implementing wellness policies that are focused on:

  • Providing nutritional food in school meals, snacks, and celebrations
    • Goal: By the end of the 2010-2011 school year, Hopkins Public Schools staff and community will be fully aware of the District Wellness Policy 533 guidelines for healthy nutrition and the classroom food environment, with a focus on healthy rewards, classroom snacks, and celebrations.
      I. Promote nutrition policy, procedures, and a healthy classroom food environment through district media
      II. Promote awareness of Wellness /Nutrition Policy through district staff development opportunities that focus on healthy snacks, celebrations, and non-food rewards as well as active classrooms.
      III. Promote awareness of Wellness Policy to parents and other key stakeholders through school-related events, with a focus on healthy snacks and celebrations, and non-food rewards.

  • Infusing physical activity into the school day
    • Goal: By the end of the 2010-2011 school year, Hopkins Public Schools staff and community will be fully aware of the District Wellness Policy 533 guidelines for physical activity within the school environment with a focus on active classrooms and increasing physical activity within the school day.
      I. Promote physical activity policy, procedures, and a physically active classroom environment through district media
      II. Promote awareness of Wellness /Physical Activity Policy through district staff development opportunities that focus on increasing physical activity within classrooms and the school environment during the school day.
      III. Promote awareness of Wellness Policy to parents and other key stakeholders through school-related events, focusing on increasing access to physical activity within classrooms and the school environment during the school day.
  • Maintaining and promoting a tobacco-free campus
    • Goal: By the end of the 2010-2011 school year, a consistent and clear plan will be in place district-wide to ensure that the 100% tobacco-free policy is communicated through signage, handbooks, and announcements.
      I. Promote a 100% tobacco-free policy and procedures through signage that emphasizes a tobacco-free campus, including school grounds as well as buildings.
      II. Promote a 100% tobacco-free policy and procedures through District Web content and site handbooks
      III. Promote a 100% tobacco-free policy through announcements and publications at school-sponsored events
