12/18/2009

After a public hearing and soliciting input from district taxpayers, Hopkins Public Schools set its payable 2010 tax levy at $38.973,978.19, Thursday, December 17.

The levy includes the following components:

  • General Fund—$24,034,243.62
  • Community Education—$1,327,635.29
  • Debt—$13,612,099.28

The final property tax levy is an increase of 8.16 percent over last year's levy. The General Fund levy is increasing by $2,047,361 with the major increase coming in the Capital Projects levy for curriculum and technology. The Community Education Fund levy is increasing by $53,220, primarily due to an increased levy amount in the School-Age Care levy. The Debt Service Fund levy is increasing by $839,143, primarily due to a second issuance of Other Post-Employment Benefit (OPEB) bonds and an increase in the levy for Phase II bonds for the Alternative Facilities bonding program, which is used to pay for deferred maintenance projects on the district's buildings.

The district's average property tax increase over the past five years has been 7.46 percent.

The Hopkins School Board only receive two emails expressing opposition to the property tax increase, and only one taxpayer attended the public hearing, Thursday, December 17.
