Leading the way in school nutrition – Hopkins featured on WCCO

Hopkins Public Schools is a leader in school nutrition. On our lunch trays you will find meals cooked from scratch, fresh fruits and vegetables, and meats and produce from local farmers whenever possible. What you will not find is food dyes. Barb Mechura, director of school nutrition services, was interviewed by WCCO about the District's decision not to serve any foods with artificial food dyes. Watch the video here.

Hopkins 2012-13 and 2013-14 calendars available

STEM for all — February edition of the Update

Hopkins Public Schools is making sure its students are well versed in the hard sciences. The February edition of "The Update" is dedicated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Hopkins has a robust STEM program that begins in grade three for all students. In junior high, Project Lead the Way classes challenge students and allow them to experiment with hands-on learning. The High School offers several STEM options, including three Project Lead the Way courses.

Two Hopkins skiers named to national ski team

Two Hopkins High School Nordic Ski team members have been named to the 2012 Midwest Junior National Ski Team. Sarah Benton and Harris Dirnberger, both juniors, will compete at Soldier Hollow in Utah March 4-10, 2012. The Junior National event features the strongest and fastest young Nordic skiers in the nation, ages 16-20. The Midwest team is composed of the best 21 men and 21 women from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois who qualify through a series of ski races. Both Benton and Dirnberger have raced for the Midwest squad in the past and are proud to represent Hopkins.

High tech Hopkins students compete at state robotics tournament

Two Hopkins robotics teams performed well at the First Lego League State Tournament. The Alice Smith Elementary team, G.O. Nutz, nearly qualified for the national tournament, and finished the day in second place in Division 1. They also received the Judge's Award at the tournament. The West Junior High team, Lego Maniacs, was also a formidable force. The team's research project was ranked among the top three in the state.

Billy McLaughlin to perform with Hopkins High School Orchestra

The Hopkins High School Orchestra is gearing up for its Feb. 18th Orchestra Spotlight Concert. Once again, the concert will feature a special musical guest. Students are currently collaborating with singer/songwriter Billy McLaughlin through an artist-in-residency project. McLaughlin will perform with the students on select songs during the February concert.

Hopkins High School receives 16 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards

Hopkins High School art and photography students won 16 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards (four Gold Key, five Silver Key, 10 Honorable Mentions).

Students who received Gold Key and Silver Key awards will have their winning pieces exhibited at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Gallery from Jan. 30 to Feb. 26. An awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26. The Gold Key winners will move on to the national competition in the spring with a reception at Carnegie Hall, NY. National winners will be announced in May.

Hopkins grad assigned to cover 2012 presidential election

Hopkins grad Jo Ling Kent is one of eight young journalists chosen to be an embed political reporter for NBC. In this role, Kent will cover the 2012 presidential election. Kent most recently worked an associate producer for CNN in the Beijing bureau. She graduated from Hopkins High School in 2002 and studied history, policy studies and Asian studies at Rice University. She also has a Master's degrees from London School of Economics and Beijing University respectively.

Lego Maniacs headed to robotics state tournament

On Saturday, Jan. 28th, the West Junior High robotics team - the Lego Maniacs -will be competing in the FIRST Lego League State Tournament at Washington Technology School (1495 Rice Street, St. Paul, MN 55117). The main portion of the competition is from 8 to 4 p.m. The awards ceremony is 4 to 6 p.m.

Lovas named Girls’ Track and Field AA Coach of the Year

The Minnesota State Track and Field Coaches Association has named Nick Lovas the 2011 Girls Class AA Coach of the Year. Lovas coaches Girls' Track and Field at Hopkins High School and teaches social studies at West Junior High.

Williams new theatre director at Hopkins High School

The Hopkins theatre program is pleased to announce that David Williams, a language arts teacher at Hopkins High School, accepted the position of theatre director. A short meeting to introduce Williams is planned for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22 in the Fireside Room at Hopkins High School.

Williams began teaching at Hopkins High School in 1983. His passion for teaching and education are well known throughout the District. He is a veteran of high school theatre, having served as the artistic director for the Hopkins theatre program from 1984 to 1996.

XinXing students perform at One World International Festival

XinXing students performed at the One World International Festival in St. Louis Park on Sunday, Dec. 11. Led by music teacher Linda Schwitzer, the students sang a Chinese song and performed GongFu with coach Huang Ningsheng.

The purpose of the festival was to help celebrate ethnic diversity and build camaraderie among different races and religions. The students braved the cold weather and winter winds and put on a strong performance. This was just one of many opportunities for students to practice their Chinese language and entertain a crowd.

Hopkins senior an Academic All-Star

Congratulations to Hopkins senior Amy Mathews for being chosen as a KARE11 Academic All-Star. Mathews is active in three choirs at Hopkins, a theatre captain, and part of the National Honor Society. Despite her busy schedule, she maintains a GPA of 3.8. Mathews was thoroughly surprised when morning reporter Tim McNiff came into her choir class, snuck up behind her and presented her with a check for $111.

Human rights activist speaks to Hopkins students

Over 350 Hopkins High School students attended a presentation by human rights activist Carl Wilkens on Monday, Dec. 5. Wilkens and his family moved to Rwanda in 1990, and stayed there when the genocide started in 1994. He was the only American to remain in Rwanda during the genocide.

Hopkins financial literacy spotlighted on KARE11

Hopkins was featured on KARE11's ‘Cool in School' for its forward-thinking financial literacy curriculum. Hopkins is the first District in Minnesota to make financial literacy a graduation requirement. Students must take a course in ninth-grade and again in their junior or senior year.

Alice Smith students ‘Go Nutz’ at Lego League Regional Tournament

Over the weekend, six Hopkins Alice Smith Elementary students competed as team "Go Nutz" in the First Lego League Regional Tournament. The team, which is coached by Ron Dummer, swept a variety of categories including robot performance, robot head-to-head competition, research presentation, robot design and teamwork. Go Nutz will head to St. Paul for the state tournament on Jan. 28.

ProPEL students collect $1,200 worth of supplies for Simpson Housing Services

ProPEL students have spent the last few weeks fundraising and securing donations from local businesses for a donation drive that benefits Simpson Housing Services, a non-profit organization that transitions the homeless into homes. The students collected boxes of essentials and assembled 21 "welcome baskets" for people who will soon be entering their first home since homelessness. The baskets contain basic household items like laundry detergent, toothpaste, coffee mugs, and more.

Hopkins activities director to receive top national honor

Dan Johnson, activities director for Hopkins High School, will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) on December 13, 2011. The award will be presented at the National Athletic Directors Conference in Indianapolis.

McDonald Finds his Place at Hopkins High School

Adam McDonald was looking for an administration position with a west-metro school district. When an opportunity presented itself at Hopkins, he jumped at it. He is now the newest assistant principal at Hopkins High School, a role he began this school year.

"I was looking for a district with a strong mission, vision, and a reputation of excellence," said McDonald. "I really loved the ‘every school, every student, every day' mission statement."

Hopkins’ accelerated Spanish track begins with Juntos

Juntos 1 is an accelerated Spanish class designed for heritage Spanish speakers and students who have completed an elementary immersion program. Juntos will grow at the junior-high level each year. In its third year, grade 9 students will be able to take Juntos 3, an AP (Advanced Placement) class capable of earning college credit.

Hopkins will soon be offering two immersion programs at the secondary level. Starting in the 2013-14 school year, Spanish immersion will be offered at North Junior High. Additionally, in 2014-2015 Chinese immersion will be offered at West Junior High. Both programs are designed for students who have completed an elementary immersion experience.

Harley Hopkins practices its emergency drill

Harley Hopkins, as with all Hopkins schools, is committed to the safety of its students and staff. A big part of this effort is being prepared for the unexpected. This past month, Harley conducted a fire drill with the added challenge of having an exit blocked.

Hopkins ProStart students cater 'Stars for the Future' fundraiser

Six Hopkins ProStart students participated in the Stars of the Future fundraiser and gained real-world insight into the culinary and catering world. The students were paired with experienced chefs and helped prepare appetizers for the event, which was held in the swanky Prohibition Room at the W hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The ticket price to get in was $100. Hopkins students cooked chicken and cheese pinwheels with balsamic glaze served over orzo pasta. The event raised money for the ProStart program, which prepares high-school students for culinary careers.

Congressman Ellison to speak at Hopkins High School about financial literacy

Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, of the fifth district, will speak to Hopkins students about the U.S. economy and the importance of financial literacy. His talk is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21, from 10 to 11:15 a.m. in the high school auditorium. Ellison will discuss the U.S. economy, as well as the importance of financial literacy.

Former Hopkins special services director to receive Distinguished Alumni Award

Former Hopkins Special Services Director, Jan Ormasa, will receive the University of Minnesota's 2011 College of Education and Human Development Distinguished Alumni Award. Dean Jean K. Quam will present Ormasa with the award on Nov. 15, at a reception and dinner at the McNamara Alumni Center. Ormasa is receiving the award due to her years of service to the field of special education at Hopkins Public Schools.

Steven Adams, Wendy Donovan, Kristine Newcomer, and Irma McIntosh Coleman have been elected to serve on the school board. Each term is four years long and starts January 2012. Both Donovan and Coleman are incumbents. The results were canvassed by the Hopkins School Board at the Nov. 17 School Board Meeting.

National Honor Students trick-or-treat for local food shelf

Dressed in their best costumes, National Honor Students put their trick-or-treating skills to the test and pounded the pavement Halloween night. The students were participating in the first-annual "Trick or Treating for Canned Goods" drive, which collected over 1200 pounds of food items and raised over $600 for the local food shelf.

Tanglen kicks off ‘College Week’ with school spirit

The Hopkins High School pep band marched in the Minnesota Lynx' Victory Parade in downtown Minneapolis on Oct. 12. The parade celebrated the Lynx' WNBA Championship. It started at the corner of 12th and Nicollet and ended at Target Center.

Fruit fundraiser to support International Club and Rotary Club

The Hopkins High School International Club and the Hopkins Rotary Club are conducting their annual Fruit Sale fundraiser. Proceeds will benefit both groups. Items for sale include oranges, grapefruit and cashews, chocolate pecan turtles and whole bean coffee. Orders can be placed at 952-988-4642 or 952-988-457. Deadline is Oct. 26.

Students will make their sales by calling homes on the evenings of Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25. The fruit will be delivered Saturday, November 19th. Arrangements can be made for residents who will not be home for the delivery.

League of Women Voters to Sponsor School Board Candidate Forum

A forum for the five candidates who are running for the Hopkins School Board will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Hopkins City Hall (1010 1 St. S., Hopkins). The forum is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Minnetonka, Eden Prairie and Hopkins.

For many years, the League of Women Voters has sponsored non-partisan debates with candidates in an effort to educate the public about campaign issues and provide an opportunity for voters to hear candidates discuss those issues face-to face.

Commissioner of education comments on AYP

Brenda Cassellius, Minnesota commissioner of education, wrote a letter for parents outlining her concerns about AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress), a federal measure mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act. Minnesota has applied for a waiver from AYP mandates, but won't know the status of that waiver until early next year. You can read Cassellius' letter here.

Hopkins teacher performing in ‘The Nobel Conference Concert’

Hopkins music teacher Timothy Berry is performing in the "Nobel Conference Concert - a State of Mind and Music: New Composers from Minnesota." The concert features world premieres of commissioned music by Berry and other emerging Minnesota musicians. The concert takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 8:15 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Power Outage Affecting District Phones and Network

An electrical power outage at the Eisenhower Elementary and District Offices has caused interruptions in phone and network services for all of our schools as of 1:45 pm on September 29. Xcel Energy is working to resolve the issue.

Eisenhower students perform at Minnesota Twins game

Eisenhower fourth-sixth grade choir students kicked off Tuesday's Twins game by singing the National Anthem. In addition to sharing their wonderful singing talent, the students also brought the Twins some luck - they won that night's game against Kansas.

Levi and Tisher named National Merit Semifinalists

Hopkins Public Schools is pleased to announce that Ryan Levi and Alexandra Tisher, both seniors at Hopkins High School, have been named National Merit Semifinalists.

The students are among 16,000 nationwide chosen to compete for the reputable National Merit Scholarship. Nearly 1.5 million students entered the Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as the initial screening process. It is estimated that 90 percent of semifinalists will advance to the finalist level. Of those students, approximately half will be selected as Merit Scholarship recipients.

In a short coronation ceremony, Laron Broadway was crowned homecoming king and Allie Rolendelli was crowned homecoming queen. Hopkins' homecoming football game is at 7 p.m. and against Irondale. It was the first day of school all over again!

Monday, Sept. 12 was the first day of school for Hopkins Public Schools' preschool programs. Through community education, the District currently offers preschool options at five of its six elementary schools. New this year is Ready 4 K at Eisenhower Elementary, Kaleidoscope preschool at Glen Lake Elementary, and an expanded Stepping Stones program at Meadowbrook. These preschool programs are crucial to preparing students for kindergarten and getting them off to a strong academic start.

Glen Lake receives Safe Routes to School grant

School starts at the bus stop

Some of our families may be wondering why their bus stop has moved to the corner. The answer is simple. Corner bus stops are safer and more efficient. Picking up students from an individual residence can be distracting for bus drivers and students and slows the process of transporting students to school. Consolidating bus stops is also fiscally more efficient, which means more dollars for the classroom. Please keep in mind, our bus drivers are not supposed to pick students up from a specific residence.

National Honor Society donates 102 pounds of school supplies

Thirty-one Hopkins High School National Honor Society students competed in a relay race from one end of Target to the other collecting school supplies to donate. The winning team filled a backpack with 22.5 pounds of supplies in 15 minutes. Through donations and the relay race, NHS rounded up 102 pounds of school supplies for Resource West.

Hopkins staff welcomed back

The entire Hopkins teaching staff was welcomed back on August 30 with a staff development day, featuring a short presentation by Superintendent John Schultz and keynote speaker Dr. Thomas Many, who presented on implementing PLCs (Professional Learning Communities).

The annual District picnic followed the presentation. Hopkins School Board members and lead administrators helped Royal Cuisine serve mostly local food to about 800 staff members.

Hopkins senior featured in ESPN’s online edition

ESPN profiled Andre McDonald's tenacious football career. Two years ago, McDonald was on the fast track to stardom when an injury threatened his career, but he came back stronger than ever. According to the article, last year McDonald caught 64 passes for 1,144 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Five candidates have filed to run for the Hopkins School Board. Two candidates, Irma McIntosh Coleman and Wendy Donovan, are incumbents. I had a great summer . . . as usual, it went by too quickly, but it was nonetheless a great one! Time was filled with "stay-cations" working on various projects around the house, and with "vacations" at the cabin, enjoying the woods, water, and wildlife. I even dragged teenage wildlife around the lake on the inner tube!

Hopkins Public Schools reaches highest level of financial accountability and transparency

Hopkins Public Schools has received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award from the ASBO (Association of School Business Officials International). The District was recognized for its high-quality Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending 2010. This is the first year the District has received the award.
