Question

Why are students who are involved in Read 180 pulled out of rotating classes such as science, social studies, and health?

Answer

Read 180 is a reading intervention program designed for students who are performing below grade level in reading. The intervention schedule provides extra support in reading without replacing the regular reading curriculum. For this reason is is scheduled outside of the literacy block and may replace other content areas.

It is important to note that students in intervention programs are assessed on a regular basis and groups are adjusted based on student needs. The materials used incorporate social studies and science concepts as they use both fiction and non-fiction materials.

At the elementary level reading and mathematics must be a very strong priority. Students who do not have proficiency in reading and math are at a significant disadvantage when they take classes at the secondary level; all courses in the junior high and senior high levels require competence in reading the content material whether in science, social studies, art, etc. The elementary level is our best opportunity to put these skills into place.
