Is there any truth to the rumor that students from North Minneapolis High School will be attending Hopkins High School should North close?
There is no agreement between the Hopkins Public Schools and Minneapolis Public Schools for Minneapolis North Students to attend Hopkins High School.
Hopkins Public Schools is under the open enrollment/parent choice statute, as is any other district. Parents can apply to have their child enroll into Hopkins and are required to provide transportation into the District. Hopkins administration enrolls students from outside based on building, grade-level and program capacities. Students and families interested in open enrolling into Hopkins Public Schools can find more information here.
Hopkins Public Schools also participates in The Choice is Yours Program (TCIY). This is a specific open-enrollment program available to Minneapolis students who meet two criteria:
- The student and parent/guardian must live in Minneapolis, and, for Hopkins Public Schools, the residence must be specifically in North Minneapolis, AND
- The student must qualify for free/reduced price lunch.
If both criteria are met, the student is eligible to apply for open enrollment through the TCIY program. This open enrollment program provides transportation to and from school. There is no tuition charged for this program. More information about the TCIY program can be found here.
